HI all

Quick question, as I am a total noob at building my first PC.

I have just applied arctic silver 5 to my processor and then fitted the AC7, but after reading some threads I have found out there is some kind of thermal paste already fitted on the AC7

Have I made a big mistake ????

If so what would be the best solution to this problem ;)

Your help will be much appreciated

1) find some thermal paste remover such as rubbing alcohol or whatever is sutible.
2) remember where it is
3) download coretemp
4) get some temps of your cpu at load
5) tell us temps
6a) if we think temps do not look right as they seem too high, re-seat the heatsink with a fresh application of AS5, after cleaning the old stuff off.
6b) if we think temps are good, do nothing else part form continue usign your pc as normal

did you not look to see if there was silver or white paste already on the bottom of the cooler? If temps are reasonable then leave it be. otherwise you could scrape it off and reapply the artic silver.

Thanks jak731 will let you guys know this weekend as that when I get time to get it up and running.

3.I have downloaded core temp
4. not sure how you get CPU Load temps but running 59,57,57,59 at the moment, comp has benn running for 3 hours now.

What do you reckon???

My Q6600 sits at around 35-39 idle with the same heatsink, something sounds very wrong.

I would recommend taking off your heatsink, wiping off all the old paste from both your chip and heatsink with a bit of tissue, and applying the AS5 again. Be sure to make sure all four of the push pins are locked in correctly, because it might not be making proper contact with the CPU.

Right I have cleaned the CPU & HSF, my temps are 45,45,47,47 idle
which still seem high in comparison to yours !!! Is it possible that something else could be wrong??

Thanks

it could easily be that you have a concave shaped cpu. You could lap the cpu and heatsink (a lot of work requiring flat surfaces) or you could download and run Prime to run get load on all the cpu's.

Good luck but that maybe the best the can get.

Possible. But from what I have seen, lapping the chip/heatsink only makes minimal difference. I would say that its something else thats wrong with the setup.

Check the notes for the newest BIOS releases for your board, possible that they have fixed a temp reading issue if there is one.

My main concern is that if you didn't even think to see if paste was already on there, did you even take the protective plastic film off the bottom of the cooler!!??

Matthew

The trick is really to not have too much or too little thermal paste, I went from being really stingy with it and putting too little to putting too much on, eventually got lowest temps with a sort of medium amount of paste, there is a good guide on here somewhere which goes through how to get the perfect amount of thermal paste applied.

Matthew on your first build you did every thing correct :p
Its comments like that, that stop people trying do it themselves, we are only human ;)

Have downloaded latest bios from GB and installed, just a quick note when computer is turned on and I check temps via bios it is reading 40, but when running coretemp thats when I get temps of 45.

Thanks iraiguana, you could be right, had a chat with local shop and every now and again they get a quad that wont drop in temps so perhaps I have one of these warm ones !!!

Should I risk clocking or just let it run and perhaps upgrade in about 6 months or so

I would say you are safe with temps around 70 load. I had my quad up there. But make sure that is the LOAD temp whilst having all for cores at 100%.

You still have not told us what yours is reaching?

Generally the temp does not jump too much until you start raising the vcore. I would expect you could still overclock it to around 2.9-3ghz without too much of an issue.

Keep us up to date with how you get on. screenies always help!

LOAD temps this is whilst running prime95 and viewing temps via coretemp
