Arctic Readies the Accelero Xtreme 7970 VGA Cooler

'The soon-to-be-released Radeon HD 7970 is certainly getting its share of waterblocks but there are also air-based custom coolers coming for AMD's flagship card. One of them is Arctic's Accelero Xtreme 7970 which measures 288 (L) x 104 (W) x 54 (H) mm, weights 653 grams, and features 84 aluminum fins, five 6 mm copper heatpipes, a copper base, and three 92 mm PWM fans that work at 900 to 2000 RPM.

Arctic's cooler comes with pre-applied MX-4 thermal compound, is CrossFireX compatible, and is backed by a six-year warranty. The Accelero Xtreme 7970 costs $97.95 / €73.83 and is set to become available on January 31st.'

I'm guessing since it's the same cooler as the AC Extreme 5870/Extreme 2, 2 in CrossFire would look the same as my 6950>70's in CrossFire:

I might be tempted by this, but my only concern would be it doesn't appear to vent outside the case. Is this correct?

And if I decide to crossfire in future it would pose a problem as my current mobo only has 2 slots seperating the cards so there is minimal room. One of the reasons I am looking to go back to a 1 card solution.

Thanks for the info tommybhoy! Just out of interest, I was looking at the Accelero cooler for my 6950s, how quiet are they? I'm torn between selling my noisy-ass 6950s and getting a 7970 and overclocking the bejesus out of it, or getting a pair of Accelero coolers for my cards.

Yes, the cooler wouldn't vent the air outside the case, so you would require decent cooling provided by your case fans in that regard.

Thanks. Yeah case has reasonably good cooling (Antec P180), but shall see how good the stock cooler is for a wee while and how loud it is also.

I wonder how long it will be before AIB partners release their cards with their own cooling solutions, factory overclocks etc?

Tbh, to save the hassle you'd probably be better selling the 6950s and getting some more but with a decent cooler already fitted, TF etc.

Will cost you £100 to buy the accellero coolers.

Nice, I have a P182 myself. :)

A current rumour is that custom cards should be available or at least announced from release of the stock card (9th Jan). But it's just a rumour of course, so nobody can say for sure at the moment.

Ah, unfortunately I have two MSI Twin FrozR IIIs at 900Mhz each. In demanding games like BF3 and Crysis 2, the fans are very loud. In other games I can barely hear them but it's pretty frustrating, especially considering my 5870 with a Zalman cooler was barely noticeable no matter what game was running.

That's why I'm mulling over a 7970.

@Bobisuruncle54,

Or there is a used 'arctic cooling accelero xtreme 5870 cooler' on the bay right now for £10+ delivery, you just need a few extra heatsinks for it to work on the 6950/70:

Fantastic in CrossFire so they are(5870 Extremes, but are the exact same cooler):

Give the thread a bump if any of this helps you!;)

They will be very, very quiet, in your P-180 on auto,(check my thread out for info, they were in my P182) they will be inaudible on idle, @70% they are quieter than when the stock fan starts to ramp up, wouldn't swap them for anything.

Thanks for the info! I'm a bit weary as my 6950s aren't reference designs though, and I can't seem to find any info as to their compatibility with Accelero's coolers.

I've sent Accelero a message so hopefully they can shed some light on the subject.
