I'm buying some active speakers under £100 and I'm going crazy with all the different specs. I'm not an audiophile, but I'd like to be able to hear the highs and lows of my indie rock records when I play them.

It seems that a lot of speakers have a low end of around 80hz . Is that acceptable really for general rock music liatening? I'm not going to be playing much bass heavy music.

Unless you spend more money to get bigger cabinets and larger midrange drivers then 80Hz is typical for the lower end of the frequency spectrum.

For the vast majority of music you won't really miss the bottom end frequencies. There's something called psychoacoustics. It's the study of how we respond to sound. Some of the findings include our ability to pick up clues about the sound from frequency overtones even though the fundamental bass frequencies are missing because the speakers can't reproduce them. It's one of the principles behind iPod docks, Bluetooth speakers and even the tiny speakers in mobile phones.

There are some very specific types of music where very low bass is required; church organ music comes to mind because it has parts specifically written for the very large pipes. As the speakers get larger you get to hear more of that deep bass. But in general you'll be fine.

Have a look at the JBL LSR305, I haven't heard them but saw some high praise in a review. They are only £200 a pair and go down to 43 Hz. Or if you have more budget and the space the LSR308 goes to 37 Hz.

:) +1 for LSR305s :)

I would note they do hiss a bit with no signal - but I can't hear from more than 1.5m away - and really its a non issue

I bought a USB Mic the other week - UMIK - and tested the LSRs vs my hifi speakers downstairs, and the LSR305s were much flatter

I can't remember exacts, but when I put them full range I measured decent output on them down to 40hz - and when you see how small they are that is impressive

in fact - they were kicking so much bass out (tight bass that is) - when I tested them out full range with music - I had to turn them both off on the switch at back to double check my sub wasn't on ...

I have been so impressed with them - I am very tempted to replace my front 3 home cinema speakers for LSR308s

I have been looking to upgrade my front three anyway - but I was looking to spend up to about 2k

well 3 LSR308s would be about 500 quid, I could buy those and a Denon X7200 receiver for same-ish price !

I have read forums saying the LSR305s are a bit lacking in sheer output - but my lounge is 5m by 5m and my ears gave up before they did
