We have over 500 films stored on our NAS which we watch through various devices around the house but is it possible to setup access for someone else in another home?

We have a synology NAS ds212 or something similar.

Cheers

You could use Plex on your Synology to serve the media and then the other person could use a Plex Client. This would all depend on your upload bandwidth and NAS processor power as transcoding would be required.

Have you looked at the synology dsvideo app?

I use it for playing my collect on my mobile devices, the issue is going to be the house power of the ds212 It will struggle to transcoded, this will be a similar problem with PLEX.

The other option is to set up a VPN (on the NAS) and get the remote user to log into your network

As above, Plex works nicely if you have a good enough processor for transcoding and upload bandwidth.

Do i need to pay for Plex?

Yeah we use the DSVideo app on our smart TV' around the house and it works well.

VPN is worth a try too, i'll look into the specs of our NAS and see if it's capable of the job.

Cheers.

You don't say if you want to access the NAS outside your LAN. But if you do then
the easy way is to setup a free DDNS. Then setup accounts for each user.
As long as you have the bandwidth you should be ok.

Synology offer a free ddns service, I access my NAS all the time via "*******.synology.me"

With the DS video app I can stream my content over a 3/4g network, my ds214pay handles all the transcoding without a hitch.

what about legality of this though..

There's nothing illegal about accessing your media wherever you like. It's your media after all. Unless you don't own it, in which case you shouldn't be streaming it around your own network in the first place let alone the internet.
