Need a quick bit of help...

So, we needed a new PC for out accountant so bought a very basic model from one of the big manufacturers, on the website the woman who ordered clicked the option for a Wireless Access Point (D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G700AP Wireless Access Point) instead of a wireless adapter (looking at the site I can see why she made the mistake) so can we use it to connect to the existing network?

I ask because its connected to the computer with a lan cable, it has an aerial and wifi capabilities so I'm kinda thinking we could do this without buying a card no?

Well, I've had a read since posting this and its not possible from what I can tell so never mind...

However, can I use this AP to extend a current wireless network? can I just plug it into a wall on the other side of the building to the wireless router to improve the signal for phones / laptops etc?

You plug a access point into the Modem / router to extend the network you have , for "other side of the building" you have to get another identical access point then bridge them ie by using a mac address from the first one, you can keep on doing that until you run out off locations :-)
