I am trying to set up a D-link Access Point DAP-1353 with my wireless router which is a D-link DIR-655.

I want this Access Point to extend the range of my wireless router as I have thick walls.

Questions..

Wireless Setup.

Do I give it the same Wireless Network Name (SSID) as my router.

Do I set the operation mode to AP Repeater and give it the same security mode and code my router has?

If I have got it wrong, please point me in the right direction and let me know what other setting I need to change.

This for anyone else who may be considering getting an Access Point DAP-1353 to go with another D-Link N Router.

Follow the setup below to connect your access point to the router.

I have highlighted a major problem in red. The access point will only work as a repeater using WEP. The problem is if you set the router to WEP it no longer works in N mode only G. CATCH 22.

Therefore IMHO, the D-link Access Point DAP-1353 and the D-link DIR-655 router using the latest firmware are not 100% compatible at present.

1 Click on Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network connections.
2 Right-click on the Local Area Connection which represents your network card and select Properties.
3 Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
4 Enter your IP information for your network.
IP address : 192.168.0.51
Subnet Mask :- 255.255.255.0
- Press OK > Press OK again

Now open the Internet Explorer
- Type the default IP in the address bar.(192.168.0.50).
- Enter the username as admin and there is no password.
- Click OK.
- Click on the SET-UP tab.
- Click on Wireless.
- Select the wireless mode: Repeater mode.
- Click on SITE-SURVEY.
- Select your network name ( SSID ).
- Enter all the wireless security settings on the DAP accoring to the
settings on your wireless router.(Contact your router technical support for
the settings). Make sure that you are using WEP password on the router as
WPA passwords will not work for repeating the wireless network.
- Click on SAVE settings.
- The DAP will reboot itself.

To get the extended signal in the rooms it is suggested to configure the AP
in the Repeater Mode.

- Now the DAP is configured in the repeater mode.

- Click on START > Click on RUN > Type:- ncpa.cpl > Press OK
- Network Connections Window will come up
- Right Click Local Area Connection that is used to connect to your Router.
- Click on PROPERTIES
- Double Click on INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) listed under "This Connection Uses the Following Items:"
- Select OBTAIN AN IP ADRESS AUTOMATICALLY
- Select Obtain the DNS Server Automatically
- Press OK > Press OK again

- Now remove an ethernet cable between the DAP and the PC.
- Place your DAP upto wherever you find find the router's wireless network on the laptopwith good signal strength.
- Now try to connect to your PC through the wireless and see if you get the extender in range in the room where you were facing the problem.
