Hi,

I have one of these lent to me, trying to get some practical experiance of some of the commands etc.
Couple of questions, how do i access it? (like connecting to a standard router) How do i reset it?

I have a coms cable but i gather i need software? which and where?

And free too. Use it with Putty Connection Manager to get better functionality.
If i were paying for the app it would be SecureCRT.

yeah my problem subscription, i thought it was called IOS

SDM (Security device manager) was released to aid non experienced users of Cisco Routers in setting up basic connectivity whilst allowing the configuration of some of the more advanced features such as QoS and IPS through an easy to use GUI interface.

IOS (Internetwork Operating System) is the operating system code that allows the user to configure a wide variety of features based on the software version and or feature set.

Dont quote me on this but i believe you need to be a registered member with a service contract to download the SDM from the Cisco website or purchase a router at which time it comes loaded onto flash and with the installation cd.

The SDM is only supported on the following 2600 Model Routers

Cisco 2610XM, 2611XM, 2620XM, 2621XM, 2650XM, 2651XM, and 2691

If you want to get access to the router at present youll need a console cable and spare serial port
