Setup:

Gigabit ethernet switch

1 x server 2003 with raid 5 storage using a gb ether
1 x client - vista pro using gb ether.
Both enabled large packeting.

Loading up MP3 files from server on client is really slow, ie double click and theres a 5 second delay.

Opening images from FS on teh client - again a 5 sec delay and sometimes even explorer.exe crashes.

Im sure this never used to happen and would really appreciate a list of things to check to sort this out..

Thanks,

Yeah i guess thats a good call, switch says connected at 1gb though and can copy files to and from FS at a pretty good rate 25 MB /sec?!

i would first start looking into the networking services Vista runs

then i would look any power saving options on the server / raid card

on a side note do you get this delay on any other machine (say an old xp machine)?

What services are suppsoed to run & what can i do away with.
Will check raid & from another machine when i get home !
Cheers.

Disable the jumbo frames unless every device on your network supports them (it's quite possible your switch or router doesn't, which would explain your problems).

I can still shift 100MB/s (800Mb/s) without them over my very similar network (Win7 client and a Raid5 on Server 2003)

Cheers, will give this a stab when i get back !
