Accessing hard drive help

Morning,

A mate in work has a small problem with his pc, he updated to sp2 the other day and after reboot he could no longer log into xp. or get in via safe mode. He has decided to format it, but needs to recover some files first.
However when connecting the drive to one of our test machines in work its saying you need to format it. Its showing in computer management. However it doesn't list the file system.

So any ideas? Or any decent software which could be used to recover it?
 
get testdisk and see if it can repair the partition table, if it works, all data will be there as it was before
 
Booting from a linux live cd such as knoppix will allow you to read and copy data from the drive to a USB device if it is not completly borked.
