Accessing my HDD through router

Hi, I'm trying to work out how to view content on my main bedroom PC in my lounge (where phone line and router are).

I have a laptop and read that I could plug that into the router via ethernet and network the HDD from my main PC?

Is this recommended? I'm hesitant to tinker for security reasons.

I guess I'm asking the easiest way to set up a media centre in my living room.

It’s easy enough to share folders between PCs, as long as both are on the network, I.e. your laptop could be connected wirelessly to your router and the bedroom pc wired into the. Router, that should also work..


For basics of file sharing on windows, there are many YouTube guides:
E.g. the first one I found looks a good start.
