Accidentally removed heatsink

HI there.

Was cleaning out dust from my PC tonight but I foolishly removed the heatsink thinking it would aid my cause for dust removal.

System is C2D E6700.

I'm guessing this is gonna damage the cooling mechanism as the thermal paste bond is broken with the cpu.

Can anyone Confirm this? Checking temps I think they have risen by about 10 degrees idle but im not sure.

If this is the case then I think I'm gonna buy a new heatsink or perhaps just some thermal paste.

Thanks for any help.

just quick check. Will the Asus Silent Square Pro be compatible with the Asus P5n32-e SLI? I Ask because that motherboard has heat pipes running around the cpu area that I think could possibly get in the way of the cooler.

Thermal grease's primary purpose in electronics is to mediate small surface imperfections between an integrated circuit (also known as a chip) and a heat sink. When applied in appropriate quantities, it fills the tiny pits and grooves — particularly on today's CPUs — thereby increasing the amount of surface-to-surface contact with the CPU. Without thermal grease aiding the heat sink, CPU power dissipation overheating can occur and will generate logic errors as the heat raises electrical resistance on the multi-nanometer wide circuits.
Recommend you clean off any remaining thermal paste on the CPU before applying/installing the new one. See this guide here.

The Asus Silent Square Pro is compatible with your Socket 775 mobo. Whether it will fit/not be obstructed is another thing. Though I'm sure it will since same maker, i.e. Asus :D
