Acer 7730 DVD drive not working

Had this laptop for a week and only just needed to use the DVD drive only to find it doesn't work. Had a quick look and it seems like there isn't much information on the drive (dvd-rw dvrtd08rs).

It won't detect any blank DVDs and none of my burning software will detect a writeable drive

Any ideas on what's wrong?

e: I'm running Vista Basic.

When you turn the laptop on do you hear it trying to read anything?

Taken the drive out and put it back in? On my Dell theres only one screw that holds it in then it slides out, maybe its come loose.

Under CD/DVD Rom drives in device manager does anything show up?
