Got my wifes laptop back yesterday after the 4th warrenty send back (yes the 4th in 5 months). Anway the fixed the issue this time and replaced the mainboard and all was good, so it seemed. Anyway later that night we go to bed with laptop on the side running off the battery and all we can hear is the fans wacking out full speed.

while playing games on it last night it kept crashing after 30mins to an hours worth of playing, and done the same today. so downloaded hw monitor and checked temps, the cpu it was idling at 65 degree's and when it was up to load it got to 85. Are these really bad temps? as after a while of gaming the games just crash (left 4 dead 2), before we got it back it ran it fine for hours on end.

What should the idle/load temps be?

Really don't want to send it back a 5th time as we've had hardly any use of it. Although should have known acer are pretty shoddy seeing as we get more parts for them than any other company at work :/

thats a high idling temp
when my 8930g had its t6600 its full load temp was 49c
my 8930g now has a CPU at 3.6gb and even thats idling at 36c
i`d check the thermal compound on the CPU

problem i have with just checking that is acer have stuck a nice sticker on the back opening saying "warrenty void if removed" and i don't fancy removing it incase somthing else goes wrong with it, i shall have to ring them tomorrow and sort somthing out :/

Are the 8935G's still part of the Gemstone series or are they seperate now?

When I had my 6935G (which is the same design as the 8930G, except mine had a smaller screen) the CPU/GPU fan exhaust was towards the front facing upwards - instead of being at the sides compared to most other laptops, and I thought that this design of the exhaust being upwards was good.

When I had my 6935G, the idle temps just like ShakenNstirred mentioned were around the 36c mark and at full load when playing COD MW2 the temps at the most rose to around the 55c mark. This was most of the time, having the laptop of the sofa.

I've now upgraded (well swapped with my dad) the 6935G for an emachines D730G (Core i3 350M, 4GB, NVidia GT 330M) so I could play Black Ops as the 6935G struggled to play it smoothly.

Don't forget as well, on my 6935G it used to suffer from a really common throttling problem where if the temps rose to above 50c, the CPU would start to throttle due to an incorrect reading/setting by the thermal sensor. The actual CPU temp was still correct but apparently the CPU's are not apparently supposed to start throttling until the temps rose to 90c or over, but due to the incorrect thermal reading, it would start to prematurely throttle at 50c. This affected me when playng MW2 on some of the more power hungry levels and the cure was to download a program called ThrottleStop - which stopped the thermal side of things throttling the CPU at 50c.

I believe as well that the 8930G models were also affected by this as well because they shared the same thermal sensor as the 6935G. If you go on the NotebookReview forums and go into the Acer section, search for the 6935G throttling issue thread.

On the D730G it plays very well, but I have had to resort to buying & using a laptop cooler because when playing Black Ops, the CPU temps used to rise to 95c and it started to throttle! The idle temps as well were always at the 55c-60c mark. Since using the laptop with the cooler, the CPU temps have been brought down to 75-80c max when gaming and 45c when idle. Unfortunately as well, the D730's fan exhaust is at the side of the laptop :(

The laptop seems to be a bit random with it's temps, as early it was saying it was 36 idle, yet we've had up to 65 degree's idle and 91 degree's load temps on the cpu. It does start to throttle a lot when it gets to 90 degree's which is a pain, but im opening it up this weekend and make sure there's enough thermal paste on the thermal modules and they are connected ok. Temps wasn't this bad untill we had the new mainboard fitted.

The exhaust for this laptop is at the rear, though the fans are running full speed even at 36 idle speed.

Laptop cooler is a step we're going to take soonish, just finding one for the size of this beast 18.4" screen.

i just suspect they aint been fitted correctly or had the paste checked, seeing as warrenty repairs are just a numbers game.

Yeah it does sounds a bit premature for the fans to kick in as early as 36c, to me it does sound like either a thermal issue to do with the thermal paste or that the thermal sensor on the board is gathering an incorrect reading.

On my eMachines D730G (owned by Acer) and also on my Acer Aspire 6935G, the fan do not kick in properly until the CPU temp is at around 70c. My D730G when idling at 55c, the fan is on but it is barely noticable. However, as soon as I use Firefox, browse the net and then use YouTube etc, the fan will start to kick in a little bit.

Well i checked the machine over last night, the cpu appears to have the correct amount of paste on it, and the thermal module was screwed on correctly over the cpu, unfortunaly couldn't see the whole module as it's under the main back cover which has a screw covered by an acer warrenty sticker.

I'll ring up acer monday, see what they say, i expect like you say a sensor isn't working correctly.

cheers

Don't know if you've sorted this yet, but I had an overheating problem with my 8930G.

Basically the heat sink around the fan (i.e. between the fan and the plastic grill) was almost completely clogged with dust. With the dust the temperature would be reaching into the 90's on games and had caused the laptop to shut down immediately several times. After cleaning out the fans the temps dropped by around 20 degrees under load.

Have you tried cleaning out the fan? All you need to do is remove the plastic back cover, unscrew and unplug the fan and either blow through the heat sink or use compressed air to clean it out. then reattach it all.

Hope this helps.
