Hey there,

Just about to buy a 16:9 widescreen monitor (as suggested in the title.) The monitor is good (I already own one), but I need to know if it can display a 16:9 (1280x768) mode. Can anyone tell me what would happen if i tried using that display mode? Thanks.

according to their spec listed on the site here

it can support: VGA, SVGA, XGA, SXGA, NEC, Apple and VESA video modes

VGA: 640 x 480
SVGA: 800 x 600
XGA: 640 x 480 or 1024 x 768 pixels
SXGA: 1280 x 1024

so i dont think it can support 1280 x 768 im afraid, if you try to display a res outisde of supported range, chances are you will get an "out of range" message. Some displays can be run at weird res though and you have to set a custom res in windows. We would beed an AL1916W owner to check. If you have one already, can't you check?

I can't check yet, as I haven't bought the product that allows me to use 1280x768 (avermedia tvbox9), and I haven't actually built the pc with a good enough graphics card to apply that resolution. I'll see where else I can find someone who's tried to run a 16:9 resolution on a 16:10 monitor, but if nothing comes up, then I may simply have to use 1:1 scaling with the product, which wouldn't be too good.

I have a samsung 940MW which has the same panel as the 19" widescreen acer. I just added a custom res of 1280x768 but when set to this it dispalyed it with black vertical letterboxes (4:3) and looked blurry. So im guessing yours wont support this either. :(

I'm seriously intrested in buying one of these. I'm running a 9700 Pro, but I don't game anymore - that's what my PS2 is for.

Who needs a PC gaming rig when you've got PES5 and Rugby 05 on PS2?!

So it should run fine. I've got to work some things out about my PC first, re-install the 9700 Pro (was running SiS integrated gfx thus far) and then I'll order it tonight I think.

A review and piccies will follow if anyone is interested!

Well, it arrived today! :D

Ye gads its huge. No dead pixels either :)

I'll post some pics in a bit. Ran UT2003 on it, no ghosting, but its great in widescreen! Such a slick lookingt monitor for 180 odd quid, so chuffed with it. Build quality is excellent too....very solid.

Go and buy one!

So you still happy with it am after one now. all so is it true that it is hd? so will be ok for hd gaming with 360?
Thanks

I don't think it's Hd, I think they would have advertised it as such if it was, but I could be wrong.

As you can see, I have one of these and for the price it's great. Lots of desktop real estate and very little problems as most things support 1440 x 900 res.

My Experience is pretty much the same as Hogfather's. It is a BIG monitor when you're used to a 17" CRT and the picture is just so much better. UI's on programs etc. look so much sharper. I watched Advent Children on it and was blown away (again).

Best monitor I ever bought. No dead pixels either, no ghosting and it's a widescreen desktop is great (handy for programming where line wrapping is pretty annoying) and w/s gaming is superb (CoD2 runs like a dream).

Only niggle I have with it is there's a little backlight bleeding at the bottom left corner, but nowhere near as bad as certain 20' LCD widescreens.

Very highly recommended!

I have the 1916W and it runs OKAY on the 1280x768 res. there is some blurry-ness but not so much that it would get on your nerves. but running it at optimum is much better :D
