Behind you... Naked!
Ok, simple question I hope...

I got an Acer aspire 1680

Its a Pentium M 1.6 or a Centrino or whatever they are?

Whats the best CPU I can put into it?

Will it take a dual core? Dunno why, but then why not?

Anyway, Im up for knowing anything else about this LapTop actually, so if anyone can offer anything about it, Im all ears, thanks.

34 Views and no one knows anything?

Ok, well, the blog says its Centrino the BIOS / CPUZ etc say its a Pentium M so this is kind of like the E2180 being Pentium core not Core2 Cored maybe?

Performance-wise its fine, its 1.6 and plenty fast for my needs, and I have now found a seller of these CPUs and indeed dual core should I fancy it, but after seeing the prices, Im kind of not going to bother now.

I have however tried a pair of 1GB Sticks in there so it does go to 2GB and so, I am upping the RMA to 2GB and I have got them on order now along with a newer 200GHB so there should be some use out of it.

I will add however, that one ofthe USB ports seems to have some hardware issue and that it keeps telling me that some device has surged the USB and thisdevice should be removed but nothing is on the USB ?

I need to keep an eye on that one.

Not quite, but yes, I know the CPU need to be same pinouts etc, but to say they are different from C2D is wrong.

They are different to Socket 775 C2D CPUs yes, but these CPU are also available as C2D

I just dont know what this particular LapTop will take as a max CPU thats all.

For example... Will it take the 5000 or 7000 Centrino range? - these are C2D
Maybe even the 2000 as thats 1.8Ghz and will be a small boost, but give Dual core over my one core?

the fastest you can get that will fit your laptop is a 2.1 pentium M 400 fsb Dothan core

Centrino is not a cpu as such its just a friendly name given to a collection of components

C2D cpu's will definately not work as its not supported by the chipset of the mainboard

Ok, so a smidge better than 1.6 and so, it depends on what I can get that CPU for then... Cheers.

Perfect.
No wonder Im so ****** confused!?!?!? - Im not a LapTop fan and we can now see why?
Anyway, I just went here...

So thanks for that.

Bugger... I also found this too!

So yeah, single core, up to 2.1 seems to be its limit?

Like I said, if one comes along at a song, Ill grab it, but otherwise, its fine as-is.

And I suppose its not like its THAT slow anyway cos its not... Its fine as it is, and considering it was free, who can argue that one?

Many thanks for the help mate.
