Hi all,

I hope you are having a good evening

It would be great if someone could help me with my situation.

My uncle owns an Acer Aspire M3100 desktop computer which he is very reluctant to replace the case.

About 2 weeks ago he started having booting problems with his Acer (it would switch on, blue light came on but no signal on the monitor, no beeping, fans spinning).

Having done extensive searching regarding this problem I done the usual suggestions(hold in the power button for 30 secs, remove all components one at a time etc).

Anyway, I decided to take off the HSF and re-paste with thermal paste. As I
had the HSF off I thought I would remove the CPU and just give the motherboard a good clean, huh, only to find that there was a pin bent on the CPU (oops!).

Having discovered this problem, I became sure that something more sinister and unwanted was going on. I tried another CPU (known to be working) on his mobo, still it would not boot (dead mobo? I am quite sure the CPU is of no use of course).

So, it seems he needs a new mobo and cpu, but as mentioned earlier he
wants to keep his old case, therefore, I need to find a mobo and CPU to fit this case, leaving me with this question. Which mobo and CPU can we get for this case?

I hope this all makes sense as my head is spinning with trying to resolve this situation.

Looks like a standard ATX tower, TBH your looking at mobo ram and CPU as there's no point replacing with a DDR2 mobo.

Do you have a budget or an intended use so we can give you a better idea, also PSU is 250W so will have to upgrade that too if you want a gaming build

TBH I am not looking to make this a gaming machine for him, as all he does is surf the net, use Skype and play online java games.

As for a budget, due to me only wanting to replace the mobo and cpu, I was hoping to do this for around £150-£200.

Is definatley a standard ATX tower?

Sorry, can you just confirm that the above link is mobo and cpu bundle. The reason I ask is because i can see a memory stick there too and I am unsure if the mobo and memory stick make the bundle.

Just one last thing (goodness, I sound like Columbo), I have since measured the mobo and it measures at 24.5cm x 24.5cm. Will the above mobo fit in the tower okay?

From what i see that looks quite ideal. As the ports on his current mobo are positioned differently would I also need to purchase a plate to accommodate this? If so, where would I be able to get this?

Okay, I am off to purchase this bundle and hopefully put an end to this headache.

Thank you very much for your support, I appreciate it ;)

Hi again,

Okay, the good news is that I have now recieved my combo bundle that was mentioned above. However, I have a problem with the front panel connector as the one in the Acer Aspire M1300 case does not fit or add up to the pins on the mobo.

Can anyone help me out please?

Okay, i feel a bit dumb really. So I guess I need to re-arrange the wires in the plug relevant to the pins on the mobo? Can someone tell me which is which? The colours I have are green and white, red and white, blue and white and finally green and orange.

Yeah I was hoping that too, however it only reads the wires as speaker, power, hdd and so on, and as it does not state which is which on the wires in the case I can only go by the colours (if at all possible).

Anyone help me with an error 12 on my video driver?

Running windows vista, gigabyte H61N-D2V mobo, G620, 2.6 GHz, 3MB Cache, LGA1155, 65W CPU intel.

The video driver is Intel HD graphics family.

No fresh install as yet, I am worried about losing any sentimental data of my uncle's. If it was my own comp I would just go ahead and do it. Any tips on backing up without loss of data before fresh install?

Temporarily install the HD in another PC and copy the files over? Or put it into a caddy if you have one?

Has anyone got any advice about which pci graphics card would be a good buy, both for quality and price?

Am I right in thinking that the above mobo has a pci slot only and not pci express?

I installed the new mobo and cpu into the case with the original hdd and now I get a message that says not geuine copy of windows. I assume that vista was licenced to the original acer mobo and now it has a new mobo, hence the message? Is there anything practical I can do?
