Hi all,

I have just got a acer aspire one 751 and I get a crackling sound coming through the speakers. I dont have to play anything to get it either, it pretty much starts once booted. I have tried Kiki Linux, Jolicloud and Windows XP and I get the crackling sound on all of them. If I try to play something with sound it sounds ok.

I currently have Kiki Linux installed which is based on ubuntu 9.04.

Does anyone know of to fix this on ubuntu 9.04?

How can I fix this problem?

Please help me :(

I just want to use my new netbook.

Thanks

If it crackles in Linux and Windows then it's not linux specific! Some measures I would take is to lower the PCM volume. NOT the master volume, but PCM. When this is set to 100% it can sometimes push the sound chip too hard and 'overdrive' it which would produce usually a hissing sound, but in your case it may be a crackle, a possible explanation would be that seeing it's a netbook then all the components are very close together and there may be some interference from a nearby component. I don't know what sound driver the distributions you have used incorporate but I would assume its alsa. Therefore, open a terminal, type:

alsamixer

It will show a bargraph for each of your sound outputs and one should be labled PCM, turn this down a couple of notches using your up and down arrow keys (left and right arrow keys to select the right bar) until the hissing stops. If this doesn't work then it could be a faulty chip!

Good Luck!

Hi Gents,

Seem to have fixed this with a bios update :)

Not getting the problem in Linux Mint or Windows 7 now.

Cheers for the replies.
