Acer Laptop, extremely slow loading...

All of a sudden my GF's Acer travelmate 2420 is ridiculously slow to load, windows takes ages to get to the profiles screen (we use a profile for me & her) & takes even longer after that. Appears to be OKish in safe mode, but then I guess it would. i know it's a cheapie, but I wasn't expecting it to develop this sort of fault!

I'm not very good with hardware lark, so what's the best avenue to explore first? would rather not spend cash on getting it looked at.

Tried uninstalling crap like Windows defender, but i don't know how to uninstall in safe mode..

please help a very confused person... :)

ta! :)

to go into safe mode hold F8 while booting, also have you tried a disk defrag?

edit: also if you use fast user switching it will cripple your performance

Have you tried checking for trojans and malware?
It's always possible that it's loading a series of un-wanted services as it starts and that's what's taking so long.

Alternatively, is it looking to restore network connections and drives? It might take it a while to realise that there's no network present (or a different one would take it even longer) and that it can't restore all the drives an connections for you...

Any more story about how it got this way?

hi guys, i just can't fathom what went wrong. I've checked for malware etc using CounterSpy, which has been pretty good til now.

Couldn't defrag as yet again, i don't know how to restart the service in safe mode. I found the service, but it wouldn't let me start it. I use disk keeper 10.

a reinstall is the other possibility - i'll make sure i've backed up her files. Of course, being a cheapaschips job, you have all that acer gumph, and they make you make a rescue disk on first install, um... i can't remember a copy of windows cd, but will look. can't do owt like that for a few days tho

so not malware (was my first guess) & avg found nothing, so any other possibilities? and are there any diagnostic things i can run?

cheers for replying so far tho! :)

not sure if its same problem but i had similar prob with my thinkpad couple of weeks ago. hadnt used laptop for quite a while. switched on everything was working ok. when i went to shut down i realised there were updates waiting so i installed these one of which was explorer 7 and switch off. next day switched on took forever to boot up when i clicked my computer. it took 3 mins to show details of drives. i tried to run explorer and gave up. eventually i did a restore back before updates and everything has been fine since. so i thought stuff explorer7 but maybe sumit else nasty got in.

dont know exactly but it was around the end of the first week in december. the update defin had explorer 7 in it. it may just have been coincedence, but as soon as i did restore everything been fine since. my laptop is not the fastest though so it maybe just couldnt handle it

well i can't even get in via safe mode now. of course got it from [A competitor!], so that's a useless idea to go back there.

any suggestions, dearly welcome. couldn't get ultimate boot disc to work

FFS 400, down the drain...
