Acer laptop hdd problem

The HDD on my gf's bro's laptop is saying the system folder under windows is corrupt. He says he did nothing to make it happen like dropping it or any other kind of force. I'm not so sure but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Anyway about 4 months ago his teacher slammed the laptop lid shut and it started throwing up hdd errors (corrupt file iirc) so I did a clean install and left it at that. Now 2 hdd type errors / failures in the last 4 months leads me to think the HDD's borked and that it should go back to acer under warranty for them to have a look at it. I'm of the feeling that I'll waste my time fixing it now only for it to happen again and again until it's out of warranty.

What do you guys reckon?

Oh and while I'm at it can anyone recommend a bootable utility disc I can use to check out the drive? I can't find my XP discs at the moment (use vista myself) and I'm pretty lacking in the motivation department.

Cheers

edit:

If a mod could move this to the HDD section that'd be great.

just send it to acer.

i had a problem with my acer laptop, they picked it and said it would be 14 working days. i got it back in 3 days. ( )

but they replaced parts and no charge was incurred by me.

very good customer service aswell

find out the make of the hard disk in the laptop, then head to the manufacturers website and download the hard disk diagnostic tool.
You can also try checking in the BIOS of the laptop if it has a diagnostic tool/function some machines do

sent mine back under warrenty, took them 3 weeks for some reason (probably getting fed up of fixing the same laptop) but they fitted a new disk no quibbles.
