Yo.

My friend has given me his Acer 4315 to look at as it freezes about 10 mins in and then BSODs.

After a couple of hours looking at it, I believe the hard drive to be borked, I'd just like a second or third opinion...

Symptoms:

CHKDSK freezes at 29%
Spinrite 6 (an HD diagnostic tool) freezes at 70%
The BSOD says something about software
Spinrite claimed the HD was overheating (it was around 55c) I then put a fan underneath it and it took it down to 30c
HD activity light is on constantly

It's quite a slow laptop, Celeron, 1GB, Vista home basic, that twinned with the ongoing problem makes installing/running things a nightmare.

Anyways, I'd like your thoughts.

Cheers

Why don't you take a photo of the BSOD and then post it here?

First suspect would be the hard drive. I assume the laptop is getting past its boot up routine? Then, if you just leave it and do nothing on it, it will BSOD?

Otherwise, could it be related to faulty power management?

Does Acer have a support forum?

Rgds

I'll try and get the BSOD to occur again.

As for booting, it's tempremental, sometimes it'll boot, others it wont; just stays in the endless Microsoft Corporation loader bar.
