hi ive been given an acer laptop but need to do a recovery on it, how do i do this, its an aspire 3690

it needs restoring back to factory setting because it wont boot windows

Some laptops come with their own "ready to go" recovery CD, otherwise you need a bootable copy of Windows and all the drivers for the laptop, see:

Boot the laptop and enter the BIOS to ensure that D2D is enabled. Then reboot and press the correct F key (F12 from memory) to start the recovery process. This all assumes that the recovery partition is still intact and working.

i dont know if acer have recovery cds/dvds if they do i dont have it, hopefully itll be a combination of key pushes

There is most likely a hidden partiton on the hard drive which can be accessed at boot with the correct key press(s).

Re-install bundled software without CD
Acer eRecovery Management stores pre-loaded software internally for easy
driver and application re-installation.
1 Boot to Windows XP.

2 Press <Alt> + <F10> to open the Acer eRecovery Management utility.

3 Enter the password to proceed. The default password is six zeros.

4 In the Acer eRecovery Management window, select Recovery actions and
click Next.

5 In the Recovery settings window, select Reinstall applications/drivers and
click Next.

6 Select the desired driver/application and follow the instructions on screen
to re-install.
At first launch, Acer eRecovery Management prepares all the needed software
and may take few seconds to bring up the software content window.
