I'm going to pick up a netbook on the way home from work tonight. But don't really know much about them.

Been looking at the Acer One with 120GB hard drive and 512mb ram. Mainly because i read somewhere that the SD drive where quite slow on these when upgrading to xp (I'd also probably upgrade the ram if i chose to do this).

At £220 there the cheapest on the market that i can see but come with linux. I've only ever used windows and know very little about this operating system. hence why i'm going for the hard drive version. What limitations would i have using this system over xp.

It's main use would be surfing the net, msn messenger, watching videos (is install codecs fairly easy?), and word processing. Probably a little photo editing too. So not too much heavy usage.

Sorry for a thread that has probably already been covered many times over. I've done a quick search but can't find much. just need a quick reply so that i don't buy the wrong spec for my needs.

Hi,

I have just finished installing XP (Im typing this on it) on my brothers Acer One with an SSD, and it is a little slow comparede to a normal disk drive, and takes up about 3.5 gb when its all updated and a few apps installed, not much space left but he is going to get a large fast SD card to help out.

It is also only running 512 with about 230mb free. I have read a few forums with tweaks on how to adjust the page file if you have more memory for better perfomance.

I found this a handy guide...

This is also handy...

Also, when installing XP, when it gets to 13 minutes left it seemed to hang for quiet a while...just let it chunk away and it should be ok.

Good luck.

PS- a lot of people (myself included) are going for the Samsung NC10 with windows pre-installed. Its 300 kwid, but seems better overall. P`raps its worth a look if you havnt already got the acer?

Also in bear in mind that the Acer has a 3-cell battery and the NC10 comes as standard with a 6-cell which would be an extra £60 at least. My main quirk with the Acer is the trackpad but all down to user preference :)
