So, i've narrowed down my choice ot between 2 laptops, one of which is an Acer Aspire 1652WLMi, and the other being a Fujitsu-siemens Amilo Pro V2045.
Both of them are pretty similarly specced, so what I really want to know is which of these manufacturers makes better laptops? Im talking speed and reliability.

Thanks

No idea about Siemens, but regarding the Acer I would recommend you try and get the 169x series. Far faster videocard (X300 v X700) the 169x have firewire also.

How much have you seen the 1652 for?

LX.A9805.255 - £684.95
LX.A9905.096 - £739.95
both inclusive of VAT.

Hi,

Steer well clear of Acer mate the horror stories I could tell you about them! I used to work for them. Needless to say i would never ever buy an ACER but i actually own a fujitsu siemens amillo 1630 ;)

Cheers,

Hi there

Fujitsu are the superior brand. :)

Agreed. Acer are great value and make some good gaming laptops. But Fujitsu Siemens are much better in terms of build quality and imho style (which is obviously personal peference).

I used to sell Fujitsu Siemens laptops, much better than Acer, was a while ago tho but they used to come with 3 years warranty as standerd which is very handy considersiding the price of extended warrantys on laptops, I'm not 100% they still do this tho.

well it seems the fujitsu is the way to go then, thanks guys. And gibbo, there is a company that directly sells laptops ;), if you can beat their price on that one then you have a sale :)

Hi there

Which Fujitsu laptops do you wanna see on OcUK?

Lifebook S7020 Supreme. The reason I like this one is that it's a 14" SXGA screen (other models have a lower resolution), it's nice and light, has 2gb max memory and is a normal aspect display (rather than widescreen). I'm not sure how many others on here would like this kind of device but this is the perfect kind of business device as far as I'm concerned. It is a rival to the lovely IBM X series.

Why this screen resolution? Well, being a software developer I find normal aspect more usable than widescreen. The 1400x1050 resolution is great and the screen is a non-glossy type (I think). Glossy screens look great but can be difficult to use in offices with flourescent lighting.

I'm not currently looking for a laptop but that would be on my list of possibles if I were. I have an ultraportable with a decent graphics chipset (Asus W3A) but never bother gaming on it so the lack of a decent graphics chip on this machine isn't an issue for me.

well well, ive just been having a little read on the fukitsu siemens forum, seems to me like theres a major problem with the keyboards on the whole range of amilo laptops, doesnt look very good at all to me!

seems they also think the cpu fan is ridiculously loud and cuts in and out about every 20 seconds, also doesnt sound very good :/

Mate,

You asked for advice. I used to work on acer technical support and trust me if anything goes wrong with your laptop you will probably be without it for a very very very long time. Their support is absolutely appalling I had people phoning in that had had there laptop a year and in that year they had actually only been able to use for a month!! The rest of time it was being away fixed or lost!

They are cheap for a reason. If nothing goes wrong with then hey good. But from experience no way! I have owned My Amilo for just under a year and not had a single problem with it.

Cheers,
Hugest

I would second that, Acer Kept my laptop for 3 months last time I sent it in to them - that is after having to return it because they did not bother to repair it the first time.

Right now im having screen problems and the laptop is barely a year old.

Never again.

Not sure how much its like the S7020 supreme but I use a S7010 daily. First off very nice laptop looks smart and its very quiet in general use. DVD drive naturally has the usual noises while firing up etc.

A few gripes: the S7010 uses a soft switch inside the left hinge. (ie u cant see the switch) and sometimes when it goes into standby mode u cant get it out. Its a well known bug in our office so we set the laptops "standby to never" in the power features.

The S7010 is a bit small. Yes very mobile and light but i have big chunky hands :P and sometimes my left palm will hit the mouse pad.. and thus while typing stuff the cursor will jump and you end up typing 20 words in the middle of another line. (the mouse pad on the S7010 is slightly offset to the left... no idea why..)

i would prefer the E8010 Slightly bigger and heavier but much more comfortable imo. Saying that I'm not sure how mobile you will be as I nearly always use my laptop in the office.

To sum up: S7010 for on the move user. E8010 for mainly office use (my fav)

Customer Support. We have 350+ fujitsu siemens laptops in our company and the support is FANTASTIC. Onsite warrenty is superb and well worth it. Any fault 1-2 days and an engineer is on your doorstep
