I'm in the process of trying to decide on which laptop to buy.. I think I have narrowed it down to the following two. Although if anyone has any other ideas for around £400 please let me know!

Acer TM 5720 - C2D T7300, 2GB RAM, 160 GB HD, Intel X3100 GFX, 15" Screen, Vista HP - £420

Dell Vostro 1500 - C2D T7250, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Intel X3100 GFX, 15" Screen, Vista Business - £405

I'm torn between the two at the moment. The extra cache on the Acer CPU would be nice and I won't really use the extra hard drive space, however, I have heard very good things about the Vostro and don't know much about the Acers.. Its a shame the Vostros don't have the 8600GT graphics in them anymore as that would sway me to that! Anyone know if they plan on doing them with 8600GTs again? I had a card through the post today saying they did, but when I phoned Dell they said the card was two weeks old!

What do you guys recommend?

Cheers,
Andy

How? I just specced it up on the dell website with a 250 gig hdd and it comes up as £524 delivered. Where did the ~ £100 go?

That would be nice, might be tempted to stretch that extra ~£70 ish! The Dell website seems to vary in price a lot day to day I find. What are the Vostros like for reliability?

Edit: Just looked at the Acer again and the price for it has gone up to about £550!

I dunno i specced it out at 545 then phoned told him it was 545 delivered with the discounts on the site then used the FIRSTBUY 0201 code and he took 50 off. Ii have today ordered the same laptop for work through the company but with XP pro and the cheaperst he would go was 580, xp was 20 quid more but even so i cant see how i got mine so cheap, the repo said it had been over discounted. God knows.

Any reason you're choosing the 1500 over the 1510? Dell are phasing out the 1*00 model Vostros, which is why they've hamstrung the spec on the 1500 (no 8600 any more). The prices go up and down on a daily basis depending on what deals Dell feels like having, there are several 3rd party sites that collect the best ones together and are worth a browse.

I couldn't see the 1510 on the Dell website.. If I go to the Vostro section it just shows up the 1*00 series.

Edit: On closer inspection, it appears I am blind as I have now found them! :)

For what it is worth, and if you can find a salesperson you can understand, there are more options on the machines than are shown on the website. I discovered the 9 cell battery was available for the Vostro so who knows what other bits you might be able to get. I think it is worth an ask. Some people have suggested even the price is a bit negotiable on the phone.
