Well an append-um to a post about an Acer 24" monitor that went west on me a while ago, I have managed to scrape in with a warranty replacement from Acer under there 3 year warranty scheme.

They sent me out an S243HL not a bad monitor being LED backlit but overly bright for extended use in a dim room. It is a real case of white is blinding and black is proper black out of the box, I have dropped the brightness and contrast to dim the display but the colours still seem washed out the white is overpowering the colour balance.

Can some one point me at an easy way to get a decent colour on this screen, Must admit though the screen is not to bad extremely light in weight and not to bad looking when switched off :)

It sounds like the gamma is too high (a problem with certain LED backlit monitors in particular). Use the Windows 7 calibration tool to lower it. If there are any gamma settings on the OSD use these instead - the problem with the Win 7 calibration is that as soon as you run a game or display a film the ICC/ICM profile you just created is ignored. I can also assure you that black on that monitor is not 'proper black' as it's an LCD monitor and a TN panel at that. I'm glad it looks deep to you though and I do find LED backlighting can help create really good looking whites - the glossy screen can also help colours reach their true potential under certain conditions. I hope you can get the gamma issue sorted as I know how it can destroy an otherwise good monitor *cough* Dell ST2320L *cough*.
