Acer X34A overclocking causing grain?

So I've been experimenting with the refresh rates on the X34A, and I've noticed that if I use 90 Hz or above, I can see a slight "grain" in the picture on the windows desktop, almost like you can see the pixel grid (I've seen this artefact before in other screens and it can be quite annoying).

If I drop it to 85 Hz or below, the grain disappears (or, at very least, reduced almost completely unless you look very close and only at certain angles.

I convinced myself at first I was imagining it but I'm sure I'm not. It seems easiest to see on a blue colour and impossible to see on dark or very bright colours.

I am also convinced I am seeing a very slight flickering at the higher refresh rates in the corners of the screen, more visible on light colours. Again, this seems to go away at 85 Hz or less.

The only thing Ive done is swapped the DP cable for a 2m one, I didn't scrimp out here, I bought a decent one with good reviews. I was going to go longer but I realised it wasn't needed and was mindful longer cables often come with issues. I need longer than original as I move the monitor towards me when I'm using my steering wheel, but I will try the original one anyway just to see if it makes a difference.

However, assuming its not the cable, could it just be that the screen is getting fairly close to its limits which is coming at a slight image quality loss? Most of my games can't push much past 60 fps anyway so I haven't noticed any issues in games (yet).

I'm not overly bothered about this to be honest - I bought it as much for desktop use as game, and I wasn't neccesarily seeking the very fastest frame rate so its not a big deal. 85 Hz is still more than enough for me (and an improvement on the 60 I had at 1080P), I am just reaching out to fellow owners to see if they've noticed the same.
