Hi there,

My friend has just purchased an Acer laptop from the main UK IT retailer. It has a celeron 1.83 (surely must be dual core?), 1gb of RAM, Atheros wireless. Now it came with vista and lots of bloat ware also he cannot connect to the router wired or via wireless. Now, I'm going today to try and fix it, but if I can't then would XP install fine? I've heard of some issues with installing XP on a "vista ready" machine.

Processor Type C540 Processor speed 1.86
Memory Size 1 GB MB Memory Type DDR2 RAM
Hard Drive Capacity 80 GB
Optical Drives DVD Super Multi Double Layer
Wireless Enabled YES
No. of USB Connections 3

Nope, celerons in laptops are single core atm. Also the main issues with installing xp on a vista laptop are that they may not have bothered creating the drivers for xp.

There are generic drivers around but not for everything. It can be done though, seen it run perfectly well on a sony that originally came with vista the other day.

You're best off having a quick search of acers support website for the laptop and see if it has xp drivers available.

as above xp is doable but most hardware vendors simply refer you back to the maker for drivers and if that range has never had xp it maybe tricky, generic drivers might decrease performance also. you could just add/remove programs uninstall all the rubbish, it should still be fairly nippy in vista with a 1.83, stick another Gig in there if its sluggish you'll probably have to buy 2x 1Gig sticks there around £13 each and it should be fine.
