Achievements - Do you care?

Well, in a few rare games the achievements do actually correspond to improving the gameplay. For example a achievement might be " "

OH WAITZ, COULDN'T EVEN THINK OF A EXAMPLE LOL.

it's cool not to like achievements! :P

Not really, it's more about the sheen wearing off really quickly.
Achievements at the beginning really added that little extra something to a game, now they are everywhere and as has been pointed out actually cheapen the experience.

The playtest of your new creation proves that your level design set-piece is actually being completely ignored, how do you fix this?

1)Spend a large amount of time redeveloping the level to better utilise the set-piece
2)Slap in a couple of achievements that require the player to actually use your set-piece.

Like I say, it isn't so much about loving to hate, it's more about boredom through over exposure of gimmicks. :)

I don't like some achievements that are there for no reason, other than just to have more achievements. On the other hand some achievements can be useful for tracking stats, like when I used to play DoD:S it was nice to be able to see how many kills in total I've had for each class and things like that.

I think they are immersion breaking at best & at worst can effect a game adversely for instance playing multi-player games like say battlefield 3 when people choose a class that is not really necessary or appropriate for the situation just because they want the 150 head shots achievement. Plus they really are not the indication of skill that some seem to think they are either as such I pay them zero attention.

I dont feel I have to 100% a game, never have and to be frank I am no where near good enough at the games I enjoy to do it.

But I do like getting achievements and GamerScore. Quite often it does add something that makes replaying a game a lot more fun.

Achievements have a purpose if you get points for every achievement you get, based on the difficulty of achieving it, and you are then ranked against other gamers.

"Take out a player with full health with a knife while being unable to walk"
Why not.

"Jumped 10 times"
Completely stupid.

I like achievements but only if they mean something and mean you have "achieved" something worthwhile.

I quite like achievements, for me they certainly make me do things in certain games that I wouldn't like certain tasks, playthroughs and such.

I like the fact people can see you have put that extra effort in to get those rarer achievements.

Quite the opposite - I despise them!

Especially when the "achievements" are in-game unlocks... like with Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3

If you don't have the time to play for a lot of hours, you're denied access to the game that you've paid for.

I can see how it drives the masses, but for some of us - it's a PITA

Then there are the close quarters acheivements on BF3... encouraging people to spam endless hand grenades, m320 and rpg/smaw - thank you DICE/EA! ... not
