Ok, a bit dramatic the title but got this message from a mate of mine this morning...

Well, I got *'s PS2 and I keep meaning to buy FF and Okami, but when it comes to it I keep thinking £30 and no points? Is that healthy? Answers on a postcard :)

And it made me think, I keep meaning to play Jade Empire; the only bioware rpg I've ever missed but I keep thinking "no points" as well.

I'm not even points obsessed but I've still lost my gaming soul to the devil!

I was looking at my rentals list yesterday (as you can see in my splinter cell thread).

I thought about adding some PS2 and game cube games and then I thought... "No Gamer Points, I only have a limited amount of gaming time. I cant waste it on games that don't recognize my achievements"... I then thought. "MS You stole my sole"

As you can see I'm not anywhere near having a respectable GS, but there are a few people out there, that I have to stay ahead of (Miss K being the most important)

I have something similar but not quite the same.

I buy PS2 games (recently grabbed Okami) but when I'm allocating my time to games I find myself going 'well I won't get any real rewards if I don't play a 360 game'. And I should hang my head in shame, it's not what games are about.

Do you want MS to give you a pat on the head every time you achieve something in a game, do you really care what others think of your gaming ability?

Live is novel in many ways, I think it's a step forward for gaming. But I do fear what trends it's setting for gaming in general and the future.

Games have their own rewards, you don't really need Microsoft's system.

I tell you there is nothing more satisfying than getting an "Achievement Unlocked" message. Especially if you are not expecting it.

I got one last night in GRAW2 and I was like "YEAH GET IN... What did I do?"

I've watched Miss K play, and when she gets an achievement she stops what she is doing, just to see what it is and what its worth. They are addictive.

Achievements are like Pokemon, got to catch them all :D

Ive got to admit to having done a small amount of this, I think if some of the Wii titles I have were on the 360 Id had given them more time :o

Then again, I still have a certain amount of control over myself, McDaniel is currently on the verge of a nervous breakdown as he earned an achievement ouf of order, and I sold Vegas after only getting about 200/1000 points. Just didnt fancy it online, as no one form here really plays it. Still has to be fun in my eyes, but it does drag you in.

Lol, i wasnt quite that bad haha.

As you all know i really love this addition to Xbox Live, its fantastic - i dont feel im better then XXX because my gamerscore is larger, this is a personal thing, i think im relatively good at games but i know a few people with low gamerscores who would wipe the floor with me online (no Krono not you).

But i do feel i need to get 1000/1000 or 200/200 sometimes i go to great lengths to do it, other times the game can be so dire i cant do it (e.g Dead Rising) - I've never not played a game because of the points - ive got low on Snooker + Burnout but still like to play them, it's also got me playing games i wouldnt normally play.

Damn obsessions! I go through my ups and downs though, Feb i didnt do much gaming other then Crackdown and didnt go up to much, today ive gone up over 1000 points (mainly because Turtles is stupidly easy) but still.

/edit

I did some statistics for my blog earlier, i havent checked the numbers as rush it but...

Thats actually quite an accurate observation, there isn't much difference between them really. It's the need to get as many as possible.

On topic, I am exactly the same, I NEED to play 360 games and despite going for some achievements I don't feel I need to play the worst games just to get some. Getting achievements is a strong reason to play if you ask me and it was a genius implimentation because it's more addictive than people would ever believe them to be and does actually make you want to play more and more random games just to squeeze a few out.

i agree that getting achievements is addictive, although i have slowed down at the moment as i found it was the only reason i was playing games.

for the past month i've been playing mostly Forza motorsport which i am enjoying a lot, even without any achievements :)

I went through a small crazy stage of getting Achivements, especially on the easier games, bit bored of it now, bored of my 360 right now. No games interest me, GoW and Crackdown can only keep me entertained for all of half an hour now.

I usually go through this stage though.

I feel the same Andy, a bit bored of the 360 right now, I have loads of games, a couple I have only played once, I just don't want to play them.

I think I am missing PC gaming, I love mouse and keyboard FPS but there is nothing that really interests me right now. I might just upgrade when Crysis is release.

As for the Achievements, they are addictive, and I do find myself playing rubbish games to get them. Luckily I have just stopped doing that and now I really couldn't care less about them :)

dont get this at all

I play games cos i want to and turn them off.

Sometimes get sick of the bloomin' things popping up when i have no idea why, so i dont pander to achievements at all...

What do they actually get you? Points to buy things through live, or nothing?

They get you nothing, for the time being anyway. They are in the games so you have challenges to complete, on a game on a PC ofr example you would play a game for MP or to complete it in SP, once you have done this you move onto another game, on the 360 you have different challenges to complete and its usually quite an ''achievment'' to fulfil them, which means usually going back to old games like I have with Kameo, PGR3 etc.

Good idea and keeps old games playable.

Collectively I just see it as people having more money / time to play more games than me.

I do find it useful when you brake down the score to individual games though to see how good everyone is at certain games.

I hate, hate time consuming pointless achievements i.e drive down every road, or play 8 hours constantly etc. Also the points that require you to buy additional equipment (Rainbow 6 - face mapping I'm looking at you).

Couldn't agree more with Hostile, there are some cracking ones but there are a share of incredibly pointless ones too.

Games like Saints Row and Crackdown can have odd achievements due to the game, TDU 'EXPLORER' achievement was just daft though and 8 hours solid breaks every health and safety regulation in the handbook :p.

When I first got my 360 I couldn't care less about achievments, but now I seem determined to get as many as possible. Apart from Superman Returns, that has some of the most pointless achievments ever.

The 2 dead rising 'survive 3 and 5' day ones were like the worst as you can't actually save so you have to do them in one sitting. At 2 hours per game day the 5 days one would take you '10 hours' not nice.

What he said, Although recently rather than going back and playing all my old games for the missing achievements I just sold them all. I think I am just bored of the 360 atm, and the PS3 is coming out which will give me something "different" for a while.

Only games I think I will end up keeping is GOW (only game i would say is a must have for the 360 so far) and Crackdown (just to see what all this Halo 3 fuss is about, and the game is strangely addictive, in a repetitive way!).

I think my achievements haven't moved much more than 2k points in the last 6 months, over which period I have probably bought 6-7 games!!

not normally a points-whore but i am a bit achievement crazy from time to time. burnout espeically as i only need 3 more to get them all, but i think this ones down to it being my first proper game (i say proper because i have finished arcade games but their just a quick bit of fun more than anythin) that i've completed fully and just need a few achievements to say i've done it!

i do generally play games for fun more than points but they really are addictive and it adds new drive for a game i think. you get the urge to play the game anyway but you also get this new one to get the achievements so you can finish every little part of the game. I guess new challanges you wouldn't normally do, like the dead rising examples given above. so, the point of my post.....i think they are a great idea :) lol
