Acid attacks

I don't know how the heck you deal with this now, the problem has gotten so severe.

I've been attacked by guys on mopeds twice around Goswell road and City Road, one time they had a hammer - thankfully no acid, managed to keep hold of my stuff both times.. Honestly - in certain parts of London at night, it's like the wild west - there's no police anywhere, you see them in cars darting about the place with their sirens on - but no bobbies on the beat, absolutely none, you have to go to a hotspot like waterloo or liverpool street to find one.

The biggest problem is the stupid people who manage the police force, enforcing their stupid rules not to follow any moped if they take their crash helmet off, not only enforcing this rule - but telling everyone this is now their policy, I really struggle sometimes to wonder if the people who make the rules could become any more stupid.

We need more real police men and woman on the beat, walking the streets, on patrol.

Theresa ******* May has just berked everything up.

I'm in favour of castration and sterilization for the most serious criminals.

This would reduce the numbers of generational criminals, it would probably be a better deterrent than prison, which are a joke for career criminals.

My idea of paying China to host our prisons would work and save money. I'm sure after a few years in the Chinese prison system reoffending would be much lower. :)
But in this country criminals have more protection than victims.

Yep, that's what 7 years of austerity gets us ;(

Prominent police figures even said during the last election campaign that they are stretched too thin.

Not killed, they can still be of use. They got hands and feet, put them to work doing jobs that people hate.

Nah, give that job to someone that wants to do it and be a part of something bigger and better.
Cut their hands and feet off and keep feeding them for a month whilst they live in a box in Trafalgar square. Call it art.

What disturbs me is that the government is considering restricting the sale of acids, this will make it slightly harder for us hobby chemists to obtain them and probably not really make any dent in acid attacks.

The serious repeat offenders have neither respect nor fear of their parents, teachers, police, magistrate, judge or jailer.
However, they do fear their criminal peers who can do them physical harm.
I would reinstate corporal punishment, but realise it's never going to happen.
In the meantime, be careful out there.

I'm not advocating vigilantes but these people need a serious dose of 'proper justice' and leaving in a gutter somewhere past the point of them needing to waste time and money in the NHS.
It's just sickening because it's not even intent to kill - it's intent to cause permanent and life changing harm. The same needs to be reciprocated.

The biggest problem (aside from no police anywhere) in my opinion is the ease of obtaining a moped, they've become the weapon of choice for armed phone muggings with acid or other offensive weapon.

Mopeds can be stolen so easily, often there's no immobiliser or physical lock, it's easy to just push someone off at traffic lights and make off with it, etc. It would be very helpful if someone manufactured and distributed a device that disables a moped as soon as it's stolen, maybe enforce immobilisers and/or fingerprint recognition, so only the owner can start it up - it can't be that hard, that tech has become very cheap now - even my local gym has a fingerprint scanner for locker access.

if it were that easy, fingerprint immobilisers would be standard tech on cars already, where the sensor wouldn't be exposed to the elements and the cost would be negligible compared to the rest of the vehicle

It's just their culture.
Whose culture? Throwing acid was specifically criminalised under the Offences against the Person Act 1861 because of a spate of sulphuric acid attacks in Victorian England. The idea that we have reached some appalling new low in behaviour is just the usual 'It was better when I was a child' (because I was totally unaware of what goes on) position.

It is called the Broken Windows Theory.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_windows_theory

A big advocate of it was William Bratton, who was head of the New York Police. You might not be aware, but in 2011 David Cameron was seriously considering appointing Bratton as the head of the Metropolitan Police Service. This was blocked by the Home Office who said that the role should be filled by a British Citizen. Wonder who was Home Secretary in 2011? Hey well done, Theresa May. Wonder what would have happened had Bratton been in charge.
This theory is a case study in confusing correlation with causation. There was a huge downturn in crime across the Western world in the 1990s, regardless of the approach taken by local police forces.

Why have people moved on from knives to acid? I don't get it.

They haven't moved from knives to acid, (knife crime is up 34% in london so I heard) they just also use acid now, 14 yrs old and youre stealing mopeds and maiming people for life, epic failure parents, I mean parent, dad will obviously be in jail.

I read somewhere getting caught carrying a knife or being caught involved with knife crime carries a much higher sentence than acid since there are no real restrictions against carrying acid yet

Well, yes and no.

Certainly (As I said before) Vitriolage was an issue in the Victorian era. However it has not been an ongoing issue since then. The recent surge in acid assaults arose initially from assaults within the Asian community. Acid assaults in south Asia and the middle east are common and undoubtedly people coming from those parts of the world in recent years have brought this practice with them.

So yes, it is entirely fair to say that "Cultural enrichment" rears its ugly head yet again...

Of course, since then the practice has spread more widely throughout the criminal world for various reasons already stated.

As to dealing with this issue, Restricting sales is fraught with difficulty. Our normal daily lives are awash with corrosive chemicals. They are a normal part of day to day life.

I would be perfectly happy with whole life tariffs (As already suggested, perhaps subcontracted to Russia, China or even North Korea to keep costs down)

Anybody who would do such a thing is not somebody I ever want to share the streets with again, under any circumstances (See also assaults with Flammable or scalding liquids)

And no, I do not regard "Because Teenager" (See recent case) to be a good reason for the sentence to be any less severe.

Can't quite fathom out why ramming a fleeing vehicle or blowing its tyres out with a "Stinger" is OK, but chasing a moped rider is not. If someone decides to try and evade the police and gets killed, who cares? And this acid attack resurgence, post the early Victorian era, is most definitely another "benefit" of Asian multiculturalism, initially reintroducing this barbaric practice, although it's unlikely to be raised by the BBC.

If some little scrote made a friend of mine or a family member blind with acid they better hope the police catch them before I do. If I caught them I'd gouge their eyes out.

Call me a keyboard warrior if you like.

White man throws acid on 2 muslims and not one single care was given. Wonder why that is?? I’m sure the racist xenophobic lot in here will come up a few good reasons as to why it’s ok to throw acid on dem brownies.
Said absolutely nobody.

What a pathetic attempt to play the race/religion persecution card. Seriously poor form.

I feel sorry for anyone having to live in that cesspit, with people having acid thrown at them becoming the norm (being stabbed is already the norm). They should build a wall around the city and turn it into a prison, like Escape From New York London.

A Stinger doesn't 'blow' tyres out. It punctures them with hollow spikes that allow the tyre to safely deflate. On chasing scrotes on mopeds, the police have made it known that they won't pursue if the rider and/or pillion remove their helmet(s). So the little ***** know exactly what to do if they get the rozzers after them. As for why they have to give up the chase when helmets come off, well the cops can be held liable if the little darlings are involved in a accident and suffer serious injury or death. Personally I think it's a stupid rule and should be scrapped, in fact they ought to deploy cops on mopeds specifically to counter this sort of crime, that way they can actually continue pursuit when the ***** dart down alleyways and rat runs.

Evil disgusting vile scum. This is sadly the youth culture in London and quite frankly it makes me sick to the stomach. What on earth is happening to society?

I can't wait to move to the country.
