I finally got my speakers working after a set of faulty cables diagnosed by an RMA to OcUK. I bought them to replace my ageing creative 5.1 speakers expecting them to be ok as I needed the extra space these save me. Simply put I'm gobsmacked by the sound quality they produce they're fantastic they put my old 5.1 speakers to shame, well worth the money and the hassle of an unexpected RMA.

I'm using them with the Realtek HD Audio Card that came with my new Abit motherboard (AWD9-MAX) and I'm seriously considering buying an X-Fi as I feel like I'm wasting them a little bit :p as well as another set of them for the TV in the livingroom :D

If anyone is considering buying these....then do as I'm seriously happy with mine :D and I'm a now a fully paid up member of the Acoustic Energy Club

Good to hear more praise on these speakers :)

If you want to improve the sound, i'd reccomend the M-Audio 2496 card over and X-Fi since you just have stereo. It will produce better quality sound for music, but of course you loose EAX (then, I doubt you have that at the moment?). It's £50 and all your money goes into quality sound rather than processors and DACs for surround you won't be using :)

Good for you. I also prefer simple good quality stereo with a decent amp and speakers to those more computer orientated setups.

Another vote for the 2496. Don't really think it can be beaten for the money from the soundcards i have heard.
Remember though that it only has S/PDIF digital I/O and rca analogue in/out. No mic input or headphone output on that particular card.

They're amazing aren't they? I got mine a while back from a hi-fi store (the kind of place that would be genuinely offended if you asked them to supply you a set of creatives!) and have been amazed by the sound quality. The bass is so musical and well integrated; they sound like a set of genuine floor standers. Also the volume they can generate without becoming distorted is remarkable for their size. Dead impressed.

I turned down a set of these on MM for £45 and I've been kicking myself since the day it happened :(

A mate of mine bought some from OCUK and they really are fantastic speakers.

I've already got a 2496, so these would be ideal. Does anyone know what the frequency response is like? Is it linear enough monitor music production on or should I spend a little more to get proper audio monitors?

The main thing with monitoring is that you know how they sound. Trying to mix on brand new speakers you are unfamiliar with is bad, you need to play lots of music you know well to get used to the tone. I reckon you could produce decent mixes with the Aego's, but doubt they have a very flat response. Active monitors of any quality will cost significantly more, so you just need to decide how much your willing to spend :) . My mixes on the new Hi-Fi are much better, but then mixes on the PC speakers downstairs wern't too bad. My headphones produce awful mixes though, unless you have excellent ones they are the main thing to avoid (useful for detecting small faults though)

Reasonable active monitors can be had for very little outlay these days.

A pair of M-Audio DX4s can be found for around £100 as can the M-Audio StudioPro 4.

Even something like the Behringer MS20 would be worth a look.

Do you know if the DX4's would be better than the Aego M's? I've been trying to decide between the two for ages as i really like the sound fo the DX4's but haven't heard the Aego M's and if they're worth it then the price difference isn't really that much.

They'll be for listening to music, not gaming.

Cheers

PS. Sorry for the hijack but it's the first time i've seen somebody on here that knows about the DX4's and could help! :p
