I was reading an article as I need to buy a network rack. It is going to be close to the main office i.e next door in a prefab broom cupboard which is a bit dusty / damp.
I'm a bit concerned about the servers i) noise and ii) the mild humidity in the broom cupboard.

The article at http://www.commsbuyer.com/Buyers_Gui..._Cabinets.html talked about acoustic cabinets for noise reduction and separately it mentioned IP54 which I understand is a standard to do with tough environments. However I couldn't work out whether there is such a thing as an acoustic IP54 server rack ??

Have a look at the 'NetShelter CX' with the 'Dust Filter Pack NetShelter CX'. I seem to remember it taking it up to IP54, but it was a while ago when I last checked into it.

IP54 wouldn't really protect it from the damp. The first number is the dust protection and 5 is dust protected (not dust proof, that would be 6)

The second number relates to water and 4 is protection from splashing in all directions. It bears no relation to damp as such.

Damp will penetrate just about anything that is below IPx7 in time. Its also worth noting that the more you 'seal' the enclosure the more you are going to have issues with dispelling any heat thats generated in the cabinet. Even a single switch in a sealed box is going to build some heat over time. IMO your broom cupboard doesn't sound like a very likely candidate place to put some pricey gear.

Put it in the (I assume) heated main office in a UCoustic cabinet. You don't want to have moss growing on your servers.

Either that or don't have servers, cloud everything if your environment is permanently underwater.
