Acquiring network address...

I bought a 3m Ethernet CAT5E patch cable for my brothers laptop so he can stop using wireless when he doesn't need to (it is very unreliable on his PC). So I disabled the wireless network on his PC, plugged in the CAT5E and the router ethernet port that his PC is connected to lit up, but when I try to connect it keeps saying "Acquiring network address..." then it fails. I try to repair and it doesn't seem to be getting an IP address from the router.

I have tried switching ethernet ports, looked at all the settings and made sure there were enough DHCP users allowed (which there are) and it still is not working...

Any ideas what could be cauing this?

I just tried that. It connected at 10MB, then changed to 100MB, then disconnected after about 5 seconds...
I tried it for a second time and it is now connected at 100MB, but the internet, etc. doesn't seem to be working and I cannot see his PC connected in the router ARP/RARP table. I can't ping the IP either.

Hmm... was the cable brand new? Sounds like a dodgy connection or possibly a dodgy NIC.

Do you have another one you could try in his machine?

I moved his laptop to the router and tried the new cable in different ports and it didn't work. I then tried a different cable and it had the same results, so I think the cable is OK. I will double check it on my PC in a minute.

EDIT: Yes the new cable works fine on my own PC, so I think that is OK.

It seems to have sorted itself out somehow...
I decided to keep the new cable on my PC and give the old one to my brother, so I swapped them over, restarted the PC and it connected fine... I don't know what caused all those problems before because I obviously restarted the PC a few times but that didn't make a difference.

Maybe it just didn't like the new cable for some reason. ;)

Thanks for your help anyway.
