I have always used acronis true image since forever, but i not used a newer version than 2010. I have read a fair amount and it seems there is a swell of unhappy people where this product is concerned.
I recently tried macrium free to create images but have not tested the bare metal restore yet. My point is the free version wont delete old images and wont do incremental imaging, where as true image would.
Now im only wondering what to do as i have got 3 licences of acronis true image for nothing with an order i placed somewhere.
Should i use the acronis or is it really that bad now?

I've used Macrium for just cloning the drive, I'd then use Macriums Disk Restore to just restore the entire image to the new drive.

I use acronis on two computers backing up to a home server never had a problem. Fully recovered the OS on my pc twice from a backup with no issues. Recovered Master boot, system reserved and the OS compleatly fine.

2013 user here, successfully backup and recovered both my PC and the HTPC several time's .The only issue I find is if the partitions don't match on the new disk it will just error, also backing up an SSD then trying to restore to an normal HDD not good.

2010 was much better IMO.

I brought True Image 2012 last year for the first time. Older versions I had were OEM's, only got to use it for a few months. Upgraded to Windows 8 and Acronis would not patch 2012 for Windows 8 suppport, which meant I had to pay again to upgrade to 2013. Never bothered so that's the last time I buy an Acronis product.

I used to always use Acronis and was very satisfied but then about 2010 if I remember correctly the product started to have major problems with restoring images and Acronis love to charge you more for upgrading the product on the pretence that they have fixed the problems that existed in the previous version.

I'm currently using Paragon 2013 free edition. I have done one restore that failed to boot until I ran Windows 7 repair, so not exactly full of confidence. I might give Macrium reflect another try.

Been using 2010 and 2011 for quite a while, probably restored a full HD image at least 40 times and never had a simple problem, all I would say is don't mix up the version you create the image with and the version you use to restore it.

You're happy with True Image and are used to it.

Some other people are not and that's why you want to dump it?

I use acronis true image and disk director for all my casual faffing about with partitions and backup needs.

No doubt intensive or specialised users can find problems but I've been fine with it.

I was happy with the product back in 2010 but i never used it the way i intend now, ie for automating the image process and deleting old images automatically as well. I used to create a recovery cd which i used to create and restore the images manualy which is a slightly different scenario than now.
True the reviews i have seen may be only from people who have issues as generally not many post to say `this worked really well` etc.
Was just after advice as to whether others would use the free licence ive obtained or if i should avoid at all costs due to x,y or z.
Thanks for all the information and taking the time to respond much appreciated.
