I was experimenting by imaging a computer then restoring it onto a USB hard disk and attempting to boot, it gets as far as the windows splash screen and then it resets.

I tried restoring the MBR and not, and also restoring disc signature but no joy.

Any ideas?

Never mind, just wanted to prove to myself that Acronis would be able to restore on to a different sized hard drive, it could, and it kinda worked...

Acronis probably can restore to a different size drive, but XP resets the USB controllers on boot. This stops booting from USB, obviously without modifying anything :)

Even if the data volume is less than the capacity of the drive you are restoring to?

You can if, as you say, the data volume is lower than the drive capacity. True Image will just adjust the partition size free space.

I can confirm that....

Just changed from a Samsung 750gb F1 with a 120gb boot partition to a Velociraptor 75gb and as the source 120gb Windows partition was smaller than the destination 75gb VR drive, it went across no problem.

Worth clearing out any temp files and the like, plus things like System Restore before imaging and moving, but it works no problem.
