Activate retail COD4 on Steam?

Just checking to see if it is possible to register my retail CD key with Steam and then download the client? I did with with my retail UT3 and Dark Messiah keys and now I can download those through Steam and play without the disc, but COD 4 is not accepting. Guess Activision games are different then?

the ability to join your friends in a game, through steam, by just clicking to join them.
the friends list system itself.

its possible through xfire but doesnt always work, if its a custom, locally hosted game

Actually, unless it's changed for COD5, it doesn't allow this. For some reason, the steam join game function only seems to work with valve's own games. Unless of course you definately have it on steam and can prove that it works?

i'm only talking from what i read when i was trying to do the as the OP mentioned, as a few of were trying to get into private games together, and read that it was possible through there.

so i may well be wrong.
