Can this be right?

I thought i could re-install windows as many times as i like, on the same system and same parts?

i was just doing a fresh install as wanted to clear things out.

but yet i got this message? >>>>

Yup, after a certain amount of reinstalls you have to phone Microsoft. I assume you are using the retail version?

Just click on the telephone button and phone them up.

I had to do the same thing a few months back, and they gave me a new product key.

As far as I know, as long as you've never changed the motherboard, it will be the same as retail. I think. Best give them a call.

It would be silly to have the OEM version only allowed to be activated once or twice. Just phone up MS and they should sort you out.

Heh, nice typo on that error message... "locate you COA label."

Yeah just ring them up, it should be fine. There is no limit to the number of times you may re-activate on the same hardware.

Yeah, and don't worry, the service is automated, you don't have to speak to a person (if your like me, and don't like talking on the phone :p ).

I always go through the automated part for it to fail and then end up speaking to some Indian woman who can only just about speak English. :)

Aint that the truth, i can hardly go a week without having to go through that routine  :D

I had to phone up twice, when I transferred my OS to a desktop after the dog destroyed my Mutleyvision laptop (yes really) and then when that desktop's mobo went. MS ask if the OS key has been used on other machines, long as you say no they seem happy to give a new key for your machine.

I guess a lot will depend on who you speak with, their knowledge, and to a degree the side of the bed they got up.

Keep yer laptops away from t'dog :p

I bought a 2nd hand lappy with XP Home and i formated and reinstalled using the original disk but had to phone MS they asked few questions like what i'm installing on and when i bought it, i just told them it was 2nd hand and the COA is under lappy. the guy said thats fine and gave me code
