Ok so we know the GH guitars won't work with Rock Band on the PS3 and so Harmonix created a patch which would make them compatible, well now Activision has objected to the patch and so it won't be released by Sony until they say its ok, nice going Activision good way to make yourselfs look like a bunch of petty morons.

Heres the post from Rock Band Forum.

Hi Everyone,

As we have said in the past, Harmonix and MTV Games believe in an open standard philosophy of hardware and game compatibility. We think that there should be interoperability between music instrument controllers across all music games. This is clearly in the best interest of consumers, game developers and console manufacturers and will only help to grow the music game genre as well as inspire innovation and creativity.

Two weeks ago, Harmonix created a software patch for the Sony PLAYSTATION 3 version of Rock Band that allowed for guitar compatibility and support for third party peripherals, including enabling use of Activision's Guitar Hero III controller with Rock Band. The compatibility patch was submitted, approved and had been scheduled for release by Sony on Tuesday, December 4. Unfortunately, Activision objected to the compatibility patch's release. The patch remains with Sony, but we have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision's continued objection.

As is the case with the Microsoft Xbox360, we believe that Sony PLAYSTATION 3 users should be able to use the peripheral of their choice with Rock Band. We sincerely hope that Activision will reverse its decision and allow release of the compatibility patch and further, that Activision will allow Guitar Hero III to support Rock Band guitar controllers as well. We welcome all third party developers who wish to support our controllers and will provide any required support in order for them to do so.

We believe that when consumers have choice, everyone wins. Harmonix and MTV Games hope that Activision and others will also adopt this philosophy.

Sincerely,
The Harmonix Team

Very very lame indeed :(

If rock band was out here first I would have gotten it without even thinking about GH. I bought GH3 hoping the guitar would work with Rock Band. I will probably sell it on now.

Activision officially more evil than EA? :p

well thats ruined my plans then i thought with owning singstar (misses) and GH3 (mine) we'd be able to use both for Rock band so we didnt have to shell out all over again for almost identical hardware so we can both play the same game.

hopefully activision come round and let sony release it.

is this due to the use of the extra wireless dongle you need for the PS3 version that activision can say no? as from how i read it the 360 controller will work?

Heard on the 1up show that at the same time a patch to make both guitars work on the PS3 version was being done, there was reports that Activision was making a patch so they both dont work on the 360!!! Utter madness IMO, let us chose, i was close to ordering rock band ( just the game) from the states earlier this week as i thought a patch was upcoming! not for a while now then!

Any reason as to why they'd object to the release?

Simply so the consumers (us) would have to fork out extra money and grab a copy of their game plus their controller.

So they're getting more money from us by effectively forcing us to purchase the guitar as well as the game.

but they're objecting to it working the other way - they could do what you've said just by stopping us using Rock Band controllers with Guitar Hero.

They're actually making us fork out extra money to Harmonix/Sony/Whoever else takes a slice from the Rock Band pie - I shouldn't think it's them though.

Activision give a reply to all this.

"The recent announcement by MTV Games/Viacom's Harmonix division that Activision is blocking Sony from releasing a patch and their plea to enable Rock Band software to work with Guitar Hero hardware paints a very misleading picture," reads the statement, released to the press tonight.

"In fact, Harmonix and its parent company MTV Games/Viacom recently declined Activision's offer to reach an agreement that would allow the use of Guitar Hero guitar controllers with Rock Band, the statement continues. "We have been and remain open to discussions with Harmonix and MTV Games/Viacom about the use of our technology in Rock Band. Unfortunately for Rock Band users, in this case Harmonix and MTV Games/Viacom are unwilling to discuss an agreement with Activision."

The nature of Activision's proposed agreement was not stated. "Activision's top priority is to provide consumers with a seamless marriage of best-in-class hardware and software. We are focusing our efforts on innovating hardware and software that are designed to work together, work flawlessly and provide an enjoyable gaming experience," concludes the statement.

Meanwhile, platform holder Sony Computer Entertainment has declined to comment in any significant way on the matter. "At SCEA, we of course want this resolved and to ensure the best possible gaming experience," the company said in a statement. "We encourage MTV, Harmonix and Activision to discuss this among themselves so there can be an amicable resolution in the best interest of the consumer."

Now this is a complete and utter guess on my part but I'm thinking the agreement Activision tried to reach with Harmonix was to get them to pay them some kind of fee for allowing their guitars to work with Rock Band, maybe I'm just being cynical though :p

so do the GHIII guitars work on Xbox 360 version of Rock Band?

Seems strange that they dont mind the 360 users using the controllers but not the PS3 :S

I thought (maybe incorrectly) that the Rock Band guitar had 10 frets anyway, so you wouldn't get the full benefit of using the GH3 guitar anyway.

Yeah you can use the GH3 guitar but don't get the full functionailty.

Well there was a rumour they where going to patch GHIII so it wouldn't work with Rock Band but thats just a rumour not even sure if its possible :)

Yeah I'd agree with that. It would be nice if both sides disclosed everything so we know who to correctly vent our anger at :D

I can see the end result being that you can use either controller to play both games.

However in GHIV and RB2 i'll speculate that new features will be made that the other company won't support with their hardware, similar to RB and it's 10 button configuration. Activision will probably make a 15 button guitar or something.

Very dissapointed that MS and Sony in particular arn't doing anything to force an agreement.
