Hi guys, having a slight issues. I've inherited an already set up domain and exchange system. I'm reasonably new to this so please bare with me.

Exchange 2003 standard running on Windows Server 2003

I've been asked to create a mailbox: [email protected]

3 people in the organisation need access to email sent to this address.

The way things are already set up for other mailboxes for group access is universal distribution groups which are mailbox enabled. The requires users are then added in to this distribution group.

I've set this up, identical to other examples e.g [email protected] (which work).

I can email internally to [email protected] and it's forwarded correctly to the users of the group. But when attempting it from an external email (hotmail) I get delivery failure.

Am I missing something obvious?

I've already tried to create a user "sms" which is email enabled, this works fine, internally and externally.

Thanks

Have you double checked the group in ADUC has the correct e-mail addresses?

Also what NDR do you get back?

Yes, definately the correct email.

Bog standard reply from hotmail:
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

[email protected]

Boss also tried this morning using gmail:

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

[email protected]

Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 [email protected] is not a valid mailbox (state 14).

Ok, under Exchange general in ADUC what are you seeing under message restrictions?

Make sure "From authenticated users only" isn't ticked.

Also check that the distribution group has a valid external SMTP mail address for your domain (in ADUC under the Email Addresses Tab)
