Ad-hoc connection

Evening chaps, hopefully you'l be able to help me here!

I got an XDA Orbit today and i want to be able to share the internet connection on my computer. Currently im in halls so ive got an ethernet cable from the wall into the back of my computer. Ive created an encrypted wireless connection between the computer and the pda but cant browse the net.

My data bundle isnt active until the 12th of december, so i dont want to use gprs just yet!

I found Ad hock ICS to be an excersise in futility, tried last year to get internet on my girlfriends laptop, via a wireless card in the back of my PC, which in turn had an ethernet connection to my basic broadband modem.
never did get it to work.....
