Ad-Hoc Network question

Hi,

I've just moved into a new house (no broadband yet), so have borrowed a 3G USB modem from work so I can connect to the internet.

The missus is working from home today too and is asking if there is a way she can piggyback my connection so she can get internet access too.

I've got a Vostro 1500 (Vista home premium), she's got an old sony X505 (XP). Is there a way I can set up an ad-hoc wireless network or similar so she can connect to the internet via the 3G modem plugged into my laptop?

Any advice would be much appreciated,

Cheers,

Fred

The simplest way... you need a crossover cable to link both of your PCs, and then you need to enable internet connection sharing.

I've never attempted an ad-hoc wireless network so i've got no idea :D

Cat5 is the standard, a crossover cable means the wires are a little different. Some ethernet cards will automatically switch the pins meaning that you can use a straight through or a crossover cable, but personally i'd just go to the shop and ask for a crossover cable.

Can you not just plug your old router into your main PC (presume you've still got that), turn off dhcp on it and then set your PC to internet connection sharing...

...then get her laptop to connect to the router via wireless, then point the wireless card at your PC's ICS settings....

then browse the internet on the laptop?

It's a wireless network where there are no access points, the PCs connect directly to each other. I've never tried using one, so I can't say how well they work.

If an example makes it clearer:

Nintendo DS and sony PSP use ad hoc networks for its wireless gaming stuff - ie doesnt connect to a central access point, but to other psps and ds that are local
