Adaptive V-Sync questions.

Simple really, those of you who have the option to use this do you use it? also do you enable triple buffering with it or not?

I tried Metro 2033 earlier as i saw a benchmark on a website with vsync off, on and adaptive used resulting in impressive results showing adaptive vsync had 12fps more average than vsync turned on.I didn't notice any tearing whilst playing it too and my fps was very smooth no big dips constantly high.(also tried in 3D could play it maxed without the DX11 options very smoothly with adaptive turned on, also by the way the game used 1722mb vram max in 3D :p)

So anyone use it always? and did you experience any tearing?

I tried it and turned it off as quickly. If your framerate drops below 60FPS then basically all it does is turn off vsync, which negates the whole point of having vsync in the first place.

So yes, I had tearing.

Maybe you mis-understood the entire purpose of the feature.

You Turn It on

You get V-Sync benfits for as long as you are above 60FPS

For the times it drops below 60 FPS instead of getting huge performance drops as with Regular Always On V-SYNC V-Sync gets turned off, you get tearing but still maintain performance

FPS raises beyond 60, hey presto V-Sync and it's benefits.

Yes V-Sync benfits are negated when V-Sync gets turned off to favour performance. BUt you actually get the benefits during the times were you CAN have V-Sync. This sure as hell beats NEVER having the benefits. WHAT WERE YOU EXPECTING?
 
Another quick question about it, is it better to have Adapative V-Sync on then in-game V-Sync off or both of them on?

Does not matter what you set it at in the game, driver will Force it.

I use it. Silky smooth tear free gaming and for the rare dips below 60 FPS my performance does not tank.

Ah okay thanks. I noticed abit of tearing in GTAIV and was confused about my settings so just wanted to check.
 
I've given it a whirl but I have vsync disabled most of the time as I play a lot of multiplayer FPS.

It was noticeably an improvement over regular vsync with a far more fluid feel and due to the fps not tanking when it dipped below 60 it there was much less of the nasty input latency you tend to get with vsync. While I wasn't really looking for it I didn't notice any tearing during the times fps dropped out.
 
It's a bit of a myth about vsync tanking FPS in all circumstances if it drops under 60. If you force it on via the cp then this can happen (espeically if forcing triple buffering doesn't work). However if you enable it in game then in most games the engine also enables triple buffering in the backgrounnd which negates the 50% drop down to 30. In fact can't remember a game for a very long time which i have played with vsync on where the framerate has dropped to 30 when going under 60.

Obviosuly input lag can go up but this issue depends on how sensitive you are to lag, some engines are less prone than others.

Still interested in this adaptive vsync though and I hear they are going to enable it on 400 and 500 series cards too sometime in April. In fact you can mod the ini in the 300 series driver to work with both the 400 and 500 series cards and get the additional options such as fxaa and adaptive vsync.
 
I see fps tanking quite badly with vsync on even with triple buffering in a lot of circumstances - granted it doesn't always cause a drop to 30fps but often causes it to bounce around 30, ~40, 60, etc. or result in massively increased input lag - this seems for the most part to negate those issues.

I've noticed this too, it's not always as simple as the fps dropping to 30 fps. Sometimes I get a weird juddering effect, where the fps isn't exactly 60fps, but neither is it 30fps, something like 45fps (according to fraps anway). A perfect example of this is Arma2 which has vsync enabled by default and doesn't always drop all the way down to 30fps as you expect.

Personally I would like to see some sort of variable refresh rate technology being developed. I'm not sure if it's at all possible, but maybe a monitor that can dynamically change it's refresh rate to match the frame rate of the graphics card. In other words, rather than the graphics card waiting for the monitor to refresh, the monitor refresh whenever the graphics card needs it to.

I use Afterburner's frame limiter, does for me.

So on a 120hz panel should i have adaptive v-sync on with triple buffering off? i've tried that now in BF3/Metro 2033/Mass Effect 3(with the 120hz unlock) and all been very consistant fps yet i couldn't see any tearing either.
