Can I add another hdd to my sons up and running pc from my old pc? The hdd I want to add has a windows 8 operating system on it and was used with a very similar motherboard. The main reason I would like to add it is because it has a lot of photos etc on it.

You can add the drive although you might need to select which drive the PC boots from in the BIOS. Alternatively you could put the drive in a USB caddy and access it that way.

Back up the photos. Entrusting all your images to one drive is a bad idea, regardless of whether it's an os drive or not.

The transplant may or may not work, and there is potential licensing/activation issues. There are more advanced methods of preparing an OS drive for a new machine, even so backing up data is of paramount importance

One of the main reasons for doing this is to backup the photos on the hdd to our external hdd.

If I select in the bios to make sata 1 priority which is the drive we want the system to run of then add the other drive into sata port 2 is there a high chance this will work and just add another drive into the "My Computer"?

If you want the photos off, the best (read safest) way to do so would be to add the drive as a second disk, do not boot from it. You should then be able to browse it in My Computer from your sons machine and transfer off whatever you need

Thanks for the replys I added the extra hdd into sata port 2 on the motherboard and all seems fine I now just have a extra Drive under "my computer". I can access photos etc.
