Im trying to learn about this stuff so bear with me.

I had 2x8gb 3000 ddr4 crucial ballistix. I buy the same sticks, same manufacturer, frequency and voltage but the part no. is not the same and the timings are slightly different. They work fine but only run at 2400 and when i try to up the frequency and run memtest the pc crashes pretty quickly. The mobo is a b450 prime.
If i set the timings manually would that help or should i just leave it stock? Or is there something else? cheers

Are you using the XMP overclock or just upping the frequency? If you use the XMP then it will not only up the frequency but also change the voltage and timings automatically to get the stable overclock.

I think so, i have tried have profile1 under the D.O.C.P menu, it shows 3000 freq and some timings, but that also crashes with memtest

Have you changed the voltage to correspond with the higher speed?

Also put the set with the loosest timings in channel A so that both sets are run with those timings.

If it doesnt do that automatically then change it manually

One of the sets is running at tighter timings than it was designed to.

I never have any luck with XMP profiles, they are never stable for me, I always end up just setting everything manually

Seems to be a silicon lottery at work with my 3900X the 3600mhz XMP just wouldn't work, won't go faster than 3533 and had to set the timings manually, I just swapped it out for a 5900X and bingo, XMP works just fine. Its got to be the IMC on the chips.

Had the same when I was intel, just always had to set them manually, maybe it is a Gigabyte issue?

I had a similar issue with some memory I bought.

Had a kit, bought another kit much later, wouldn't run properly.

Turned out it was a very slightly different kit with worse timings but once I set everything to the worse timings it all worked.

The memory has to match so you just have to put everything at the performance of the worst kit.
