Well, at least I managed a reply without warning the OP that vaseline can degrade rubber in condoms or dildoes.

You should stop when it isn't necessary. Your lips will only be worse when you don't use it, your skin will become too dependant on it.
Some type of lip balm would be better than Vaseline especially in your line of work with the sun and the cold. The lip balm will give you better protection and for longer.

strange my ex has the exact same problem. she was lost without her little tin, had to have it.

You say that but you also mention you are unconciously reaching for the vaseline and you have mentioned your lips being "chapped"
Drinking more water might help. If your lips are actually dry you might just be needing more bodily fluids.
