adding 4 GB more of RAM to my system-will it make a difference?

At the moment I'm running 4 gigabytes Patriot sector five memory. I've noticed recently that my system sometimes runs a little bit slow and wondered if adding 4GB more would make a massive difference. I'm assuming I need to keep to the same type of memory and if that is the case then I can pick 4 gigabytes extra up for £44.
is it worth it?
cheers for any advice

adding more ram is/was always a way to make your system abit more snappy, and adding more will not be a negative that's for sure. Although games nowadays use 2/4gb again adding more will only be good!

Unless your system is running close to 4GB then adding more won't benefit you.

my gaming rig maxs out at around 2.5GB so having 8GB would just be a waste.

What runs slow exactly?

Increasing the memory will definitely help.

Even if applications don't use the memory, windows with cache commonly accessed files into memory (standby memory), thus speeding up disk access.

Another cheap way of speeding the system is purchasing a USB stick and using Windows Readyboost. This again will cache files speeding up disk access and really does work. You ideally need to have a USB stick with fast read times however.

Thanks everybody for the replies, I am wondering whether it's time to think about upgrading my system. One of the programs that I do run which I didn't mention is a voice recognition program which apparently needs a lot of L3 cache. On one of the voice recognition forums the resident computer expert only suggests Intel processors because of their greater cache. If I was to upgrade however that would be quite expensive and would involve me changing my RAM, motherboard and processor. How much would I have to spend to see a significant improvement in my system?
Once again any help is much appreciated :-)

For what its worth I've just found 8gb of the same RAM for £55 - checked and motherboard can support up to 16GB RAM, so its simply a case of installing in the remaining two slots??

You already have DDR3 memory, so you just need a suitable board, MSI P67A-G45 @ £90, & ideally a 2500k, but I've noticed the price of them has risen sharply since I bought mine.
But, as I don't use AMD, I can't comment on whether you would see any benefits in performance over your present setup.

Just be patient & wait a month or two, & hopefully 2500k prices will be cheaper, as there new cpu's on the horizon.

cheers, do you think its worth going for 8gb extra compared to 4gb seeing as its only anout £11 more?

You might as well for the future, but it depends on how you use the ram - I got a system use thingymagiggy and I rarely use more than 70% of my ram, so I won't be upgrading too soon
