Adding a couple of RJ45 sockets

sorry is this is a silly thread, I would like to install a couple of network points in our lounge up to the office upstairs where the broadband connection is. This would be done outside of the house.

Should I be using an external CAT5e copper UTP cable or do i need shielded ? and as it will be connected to a standard twin port face plate so do i need solid core or multi core ?

External grade UTP is the best bet (shielded cable needs to be earthed).

You want solid core cable (all external grade cable probably is anyway).

You'll obviously need one cable per port.

Probably will be solid.

Have you got faceplates yet? If you want gig speeds make sure that you get 5e faceplate too. Don't forget you'll probably need a punch down tool too.

yar I got a couple of Cat5e Double Socket RJ45 Ethernet Network Face Plates and a Krone Type IDC Punch Push Down Insertion Network Tool. The face plates fit a standard 25mm back box which I have loads of from the house dry lining.

My biggest regret right now if I'm honest is not wiring this in from day one, the house is dry lined and plastered now lol. The only saving grace is that I really only need the sockets in the lounge and its on the same side of the house as the office is and theres already a virgin media cable up that elevation.

If I need any others up stairs ie in the bedrooms then I can easily go up over and down through the loft.

Complete missed opportunity though.
