Adding a "Forward" or "Redirect" to a Zone File

I'm convinced I've done this before in the past, but cannot for the life of me remember how. I'm going to use example.com below as just that, an example.

We are running DNS for our main domain name, example.com
We run the Zone File which contains numerous A, CNAME, MX records etc.
I've had a request that a subdomain or our main domain would automatically forward you to a site not controlled by us.

So, if somebody was to type in test.example.com they would automatically be forwarded to www.atotallydifferentdomain.com

Now with hosting companies you simply setup a new forwarder and it does everything for you. However I'm editing the raw zone files here
Can anyone tell me in what format forwarders need to appear in a zone file?

Or would this be done outside of the Zone File?

What's stopping you just adding an A record that points test.example.com to the IP of www.atotallydifferentdomain.com?

Another way to do this would be to setup a 301 re-direct we use them quite a lot at work.

Why edit a zone file when you have DNS installed?

As above I'd create an A record for the web site.
