adding a resolution parameter to a game's exe shortcut, how?

What do I need to type as an extension to an exe's shortcut for it to run in a certain resolution?

What game? Resolutions get set in different ways depending on the game engine.

also, is there something to be typed so that it can be in window mode too?

Right click the shortcut select properties target should look like this

"C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142Launcher.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050

This is for battlefield 2142, just change the numbers at the end for whatever res u need.
