Back in the SB64 days, my Final Fantasy VII installation CD had a separate installer that added the Yamaha XG software synth. In Windows control panel > sound, you could switch between Windows synth, SB64 synth and the Yamaha XG synth.
Now I'm under Windows 8.1 with a bog standard Realtek HD, is there anything that I can do like that nowadays? I've got loads of old MIDI files, some I created myself and some downloaded off the net of popular songs, and I'm interested to hear what they sound like under other software instruments. The default instrument in Windows 8.1 is Microsoft synth, although I can't see it under control panel > sound. I have to go into Winamp in order to see it.
